Match Report - 4th October 2009
The score doesn’t tell the whole tale. The result was deserved but Hanwell turned up with just 9 players one of whom played with an injury. Credit to the hard work and determination of Hanwell that the last two goals came in stoppage time at the end of the match. The Bs made much too hard work of winning the tie and for much of the match Hanwell didn’t look as though they were short of players. The pitch was superb, a perfect stage for great passing football. It’s rare at this level to come across such a well looked after pitch. The Bs created enough good chances to have sealed the game by half time. Four very good chances were squandered. In the second half it was inevitable that Hanwell would tire and Stephen didn’t have anything to do in the second half. The Bs best play came in the final 15 to 20 minutes. The Bs were pleased to welcome back Joe and Jay to the defence and, with Hanwell two players short, Russ was able to play much of the game up front. Sid was liveliest up front, his rampaging runs down the right caused problems and from his cross CJ opened the scoring on 32 minutes volleying home from close range. CJ, Kyle, Luis and Nick also had nailed on chances to add to the score but each went just wide. Sid beat the keeper to the ball raced to the bye line and crossed but CJ couldn’t get into position quickly enough to finish. After the break chances fell to CJ, Adam, Luis and Joe. Joe came closest latching onto a half cleared corner he scuffed his shot but it beat the keeper and rebounded off the post. Later Jay made an energetic and enterprising run out of defence that took him deep into the Hanwell half. Luis switched from defence to midfield and he went very close with a fizzing shot that the keeper saved. As the game neared the end the Bs conjured some neat moves down the right. Kyle twice did well to beat the full back and deliver crosses into the box. But it was the drive and excellent link up play of Adam which set up the two goals that finished Hanwell’s resistance. His diagonal through ball picked out Sid who, from a tight angle, sent over a looping cross that turned into a brilliant shot that dropped under the bar into the far corner. Then another pass from Adam sent Sid into space on the right and his cross was tapped home by Russ. Adam’s industry and never say die attitude was a key factor in the Bs win and won him the man of the match award. |
