The Bs produced their best display of the season to win a place in the second round of the County Cup. After a poor display the previous week that saw them comprehensively beaten, they made a positive start which saw them two up in the opening nine minutes and played strong confident football after the break.

Hayes came into the match severely depleted, with just ten players and without their regular keeper who was at a trial with Leyton Orient. But the Bs were also missing six players and are a division below Hayes. The Bs also had three of their regular defenders unavailable.

So the Bs drafted Adam and Thomas into the backline and Russ had to switch from centre forward to centre half. Nick Kyriacou’s corners were a key factor in the match as the Bs struck three times from his excellent deliveries. On six minutes Adam side footed the first corner home and then 3 minutes later did it again with a glancing header. Francis, Conor, Kyle and Russ all had chances to add to the lead but hesitant play allowed Hayes to get back into the game. A quick break down the middle caught the Bs out and Hayes scored with a well struck shot. In the last minute of the half they repeated this to level the score.

The Bs had just one sub, Shomari, and he came on for Francis in the second half. He made an immediate impact linking up with Kyle in the centre. Sid and CJ, who had struggled for chances in the first half, were much livelier after the break. Three minutes in, Sid restored the lead heading home from another Nick corner snapping up Shomari’s flick on. CJ deserved a goal following a tremendous shot that flew just over and a brilliant turn and shot that thumped the post. Chances came freely with Kyle, CJ, Sid, Nick, Russ and Francis all having shots.

The defence looked much more composed and all the players made a solid, positive and composed contribution. Sid worked very hard to add to his goal and had a hard battle with the defence. He was booked midway through the half for arguing with the referee after he was brought down as he charged through on goal.

For all their efforts the Bs were still only one goal ahead and Hayes had a few chances to equalise. But Shomari clinched the win with a brilliantly taken late goal turning his defender twice and then placing a hard accurate shot home.

For his tremendous work rate and strong attacking play Sid took the man of the match award. In Round 2 the Bs are home to Lea Valley United.
