Match Report - 18th October 2009
The Bs run in the Middlesex County Cup ended in Round 2 at home to Lea Valley United A. The match was played at Broadfields and Lea Valley deservedly won the tie 0-2. For the Bs players the result was disappointing having put in so much effort. But it’s important to keep some perspective with this score. Lea Valley are a Premier Division team from the Cheshunt League. To come out of this with a respectable score is no mean feat and shows the character and determination and work the team put in. Lea Valley felt that they might have scored eight. They dominated on chances but the fact that they struggled to score was down to the superb goalkeeping by Stephen and plenty of dogged defending by the back four and the midfield which meant that plenty of chances were put wide. The Bs were up against it from the start and Lea’s quick play and strong, fast challenges meant that the Bs were always struggling for possession. In the first half the Bs had three chances from Thomas and Russ but there were few patches where they controlled the play long enough to threaten. Sid and Russ had to work with scraps. Joe, Jay, Nick and Jordan did well at the back and improved as the game went on. In midfield Kyle, Thomas and Adam put in a lot of work as they constantly had to battle to deny Lea space as they moved the ball around well. Lea got frustrated as time went on and chance after chance went begging. The breakthrough took half an hour and it was a sloppy goal. A long shot was half cleared by Stephen with his feet but Lea snapped up the rebound and scored from close range. In the second half the Bs made three changes. Luis for Adam, Shomari for Sid and Conor for George. The Bs had more of the ball and threatened more this half. Stephen had less to do as Lea had fewer shots and most went wide. But Joe and Jay snuffed out a lot before it came to Stephen. The Bs best chance came from Jordan’s corner where the ball fell loose in the six yard box and there was an almighty scramble to stab it home but their keeper finally fell on the ball to deny the Bs. Shomari also had two good opportunities later on and Sid had a couple of good breaks but couldn’t find Russ with his crosses. Lea sealed the win with a determined move down the right which saw them work it into the box and side foot home from close range. The Bs made a few other changes to try and threaten more. Sid returned in place of Kyle. Then Jordan was hit in the face by the ball and Luis took over at right back allowing Kyle back into midfield. Adam also came back on in place of Conor. Late on George took over from Shomari. Man of the match was Stephen for keeping the Bs in the game with several top class saves that were applauded by both teams. But there were also effective and hard working performances by Joe, Jay, Thomas, Kyle, Adam, Russ and Nick. |
