Match Report - 28th March 2010
With just three games left, the Bs dropped into the bottom two in Division 3 following this defeat. But it’s very tight and it doesn’t take many points to jump several places quickly. The Bs had a set back before the match when keeper Stephen Howden was ill and couldn’t play. Joe took his place and, as in several games, deputised well. As in the last two games the Bs had a depleted squad with Nick starting despite not being fully fit. They started with Kyle, Ali and Josh as a back three but soon switched Russ back to provide extra cover. Midway through the half, Jordan took over from Nick and made up a five man midfield leaving CJ as the sole striker. Pitshanger were well worth their win. The Bs high point was Luis’s goal, from a close range shot, which gave them the lead. But Pitshanger then hit back, putting the pressure on the Bs, forcing them on the back foot and creating plenty of chances. It was just as well for the Bs that Pitshanger’s finishing was poor, they squandered several very good chances. At the other end, apart from the goal, the Bs created only one chance in the first half, which Kyle sent high over the bar. The Bs held the lead till almost the end of the half but, for the second week running, conceded late on giving Pitshanger the half time impetus. The goal was taken well but the striker was allowed to work his way close in and tucked the ball home too easily. In the second half Jordan switched to right back taking over from Kyle. Nick returned up front. The Bs were more effective this half but Pitshanger still controlled the ball better and were much quicker to it. Eight minutes in they took the lead following an attack down the right and scored with an acrobatic, close range, overhead kick. The Bs reorganised to try and add more effective play up front. Kyle returned and played on the right. Francis came off, Luis went up front, Russ switched to midfield and CJ moved to centre back. In the last 20 minutes the Bs looked their most effective as they put the pressure on. CJ, Tom, Russ, Francis and Luis all had chances and some went very close. But they couldn’t find a way back and Pitshanger held on for the points. There were two clear contenders for man of the match and they were the same two players as last week – Ali and Russ. Both were very good but Russ showed the qualities needed from all the players right now – his determination, leadership and work rate were outstanding as he tried to drive the team on. |
