Match Report - 19 January 2003

The first game of Phase 2 saw Headstone beaten by an impressive Greenford Celtic by 4-2. Headstone battled hard throughout but, until the last part of the game, Headstone found it hard to match Greenford's speed to the ball, passing and strong defence. Both teams also had to battle against a very boggy pitch.

Jordan Wright, the new captain, was called into action early on as Greenford pressed forward but he saved well. After 8 minutes Greenford took the lead, getting behind the Headstone defence and shooting home from inside the area.

Thomas, George and Jordan worked hard in midfield to get Brett on the attack but had difficulty keeping possession. Jordan had a chance to equalise with a break down the left but his shot was saved by the keeper. Then from a throw in on the right Headstone failed to clear and Greenford made it 2-0.

Headstone improved in the second half. Ciaran and Michael worked hard at the back and Thomas and George, who never stopped running, had shots on goal. Early in the half Josh made his first appearance coming in on for Michael, and Russell replaced Brett up front.

But after 44 minutes Greenford scored a third from a corner on the left. The game looked over but instead of getting down, Headstone battled even harder. Jordan, Thomas and George pushed Greenford back and on 48 minutes put Russell through to score with a powerful shot from the edge of the area. A minute later Jordan, Thomas and Russell broke clear. Thomas hit the post but Russell made it 3-2 from close range. From the kick off, however, Greenford scored a fourth to secure a well deserved win.
