Kodak tournament 14 July 2007A fantastic performance by the As won them the Kodak tournament. Here is the full story from manager David Prendeville.
Kodak 0 Headstone 1 The first match saw Headstone drawn against the host. This was a difficult and tight match which saw Headstone up against much larger boys. The match was extremely physical with Ryan Hayes and Luke Jerome standing strong in this battle. Headstone played controlled football and came away with a deserved win. Princes Park 0 Headstone 3 Princes Park have just been promoted to div 1 and were full of confidence. Princess Park got off to the better start and forced Headstone into defensive duties. Headstone though started to build from the back and began to dominate the midfield. Jack Morrison and James Brophy cut through their midfield and Headstone went on to win comfortably 3-0. St Josephs 2 Headstone 1 St Josephs again as in other tournaments gave Headstone a hard fought local derby. At 1-1 nothing separated the two teams, with a minute to go Headstone went to sleep on a free kick and St Josephs scored a well worked goal. Wealdstone 1 Headstone 3 Wealdstone had just beaten St Josephs and came into the match full of confidence. The confidence was short lived when Headstone scored straight from the kick off, Wealdstone pulled back a goal following a defensive mix up but Headstone regained their confidence and scored 2 quick goals. Semi Final: Headstone Whites 1 Headstone Reds 1 (Whites win on penalties) For the second time this year two Headstone sides faced each other in a semi final. This match was an extremely close affair. The Headstone Reds took the lead following a horribly deflected goal past the goalkeeper. The reds fought extremely hard to keep onto to the lead and looked to have subdued the free scoring Headstone Whites. Then came the key event in the match. Joshua Lapompe for the Reds hit a superb drive from the other end of the pitch. The ball passed through a number of players and hit the upright, the ball deflected out to Shomari Bridgewater but before he could score the goal that would have finished off the Whites Michael Prendeville in goal somehow spread his body in front of the ball and pulled off a wonderful save. Michael recovered and quickly threw the ball up the pitch to Liam Coles who calmly slotted the ball into the goal to make it Final: Headstone 1 Kodak 0 Headstone it is worth noting had no subs and I must admit I felt worried as to how the boys would cope with such a physical battle against Kodak. The boys or should I say men did themselves and the club proud. From the kick off there was only one team in control. Headstone continued to play their passing football and scored first. Kodak came back at us but the boys continued to play in a controlled manor. Kodak continued to bring on fresh players but they could not break down Headstone, who, another day if their finishing had been better, could have won this game by a higher score line. The second half went on for just under 13 minutes against the allotted time of 7 mins but Headstone stayed focused and came out worthy winners. The boys were congratulated by the Chairman Kevin Duffy who had come down to support them in the final. |
