Special 1st April Training Programme: Footballet - Ballet for Footballers
B Team Manager Andy Coleman told the boys that the Middlesex County FA’s Junior Organisation for Key Exercises group are running a pilot training programme for youth football teams, called Footballet, to trial the benefits of using ballet to help develop young players. Ballet provides balance, coordination and agility which are also key strengths for footballers. He said that the B team were chosen to take part in this programme. It involves all the players participating in an exercise programme devised by the English School of Ballet which will run from Saturday 1st April until the end of the season. The programme consists of exercises that the boys will do during Saturday training backed up by practise during the week at home. The exercises take the team step by step from the basics of stance and positioning to the initial dance movements. Andy then told the boys that at the end of the programme in June the Middlesex FA will put on a presentation for Anatoly Uvbinad, the Chief Choreographer of the English School of Ballet who will assess the progress of the pilot teams. So Andy, Mark Wrigley and Brian Lynch, led the boys through their first steps into the world of dance. Following the English School of Ballet's detailed instruction programme, the coaches introduced the boys to the basic foot and arm positions and initial dance steps. "We were all a bit tentative at first," said Andy, "neither me, Mark nor Brian are Rudolf Nureyev or Wayne Sleep and we had to show the boys how it's done, but once we all got going there were definitely signs of progress, though more from the boys than the coaches!" |
